If the shoe fits…

by Debbie on July 1, 2009

Shoes!!!! The word is synonymous with women almost. I know it is with me. If you could see my closet, you would agree. I have many pairs of shoes all organized in my closet so that I can coordinate them with all my outfits. All I have to do is just put them on each day and my feet are usually protected. Unless of course I choose shoes that are too small, too large or for some other reason, do not fit well.

Recently, I needed another pair of sandals for a particular outfit and was able to find a very cute pair at a very discounted price. I only took time to try on one of the shoes before leaving the store. Unfortunately, when I needed to wear the shoes, I realized one was my size and it fit really well and the other one was too small. Well the shoe didn’t fit so I could not wear it. I was so disappointed.

Life is full of many disappointments much bigger than my “too small” shoes, that is for sure. God wants us to be more prepared for those disappointments. We are taught to dress our physical body with clothes and shoes yet we may not be aware that we need to be dressing our spirits every day as well. God’s Word teaches us how to dress our spirits in Eph. 6: 10-18.

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion.

Did you notice the word “stand” in this passage of scripture? I don’t know about you but if I am going to have to stand, I want some shoes that fit well. In verse 15 it states that the shoes that we put on our spirits should be the peace that comes from the Good News so that we will be fully prepared. I know that once I put on my physical shoes, I am most likely fully prepared….or dressed, you might say! Would you leave home without your shoes? Not likely! So why do we leave home without the peace that comes from the Good News? What is the Good News? Truth! What is the truth? God’s Word!!

You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News. This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God’s wonderful grace.  Colossians 1:5-6 NLT

Good news changes lives! Do you want some Good News? Dress your spirit before you leave the house. Don’t leave home without your spiritual clothes. There are definitely some shoes that will fit all of us. Believe me…the peace that comes from the Good News will fit…don’t leave home without it. Then you will be standing firm and prepared.

Father,

Thank you for the peace that comes from the Good News…your Word!! By faith, I dress my spirit. I put on every piece of armor so that I am able to resist the enemy and still be standing firm. I put on the belt of truth and the body armor of your righteousness. For shoes, I put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that I am fully prepared. I hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. I put salvation on as my helmet and I take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. I do all this through prayer to you, knowing and believing that I am fully dressed and prepared for the day. In Jesus name, Amen.
