Mirror, Mirror…

by Debbie on August 8, 2009

It is amusing to watch my pet cockatiel Kay Kay look in her mirror.  Yes I said mirror.  She has a mirror in her cage and she absolutely loves to perch in front of it and say kind words to herself.  I am not certain that she realizes that it is really her.  She may even think it is another bird.  No matter what she thinks, I just love the praises that she gives herself.  She repeatedly says, 'pretty bird, I love you' and  then she gives herself a big wolf whistle.  One day as I was cleaning out her cage she was perched on that mirror doing her usual praising and then looked directly at me and said as plain as day "I love you".  I thought it was so wonderful to have her sitting there praising herself about how pretty she is and then look at me and tell me that she loves me.  This occasion reminded me of the two most important commandments that Jesus gave his disciples.

"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' " Matt. 22:37-39

It is evident that when Kay Kay looks in her mirror that she loves herself.  She is not constantly telling herself that she is ugly, fat, or using any other negative words.  I have to admit that she does spend daily time taking good care of herself.  She does numerous activities that keep her looking beautiful.  She prunes her feathers, she flaps her feathers, she gets plenty of sleep, and she requests that I keep fresh water, seed and honey nut cheerios in ample supply for her.  It is no wonder that she is so cheerful and a delight to be around.  She loves herself and takes care of herself daily and makes sure that I keep her supplied with all her nutritional needs.  If I ever forget about her, she asks me to take care of her needs by chirping rather loudly to get my attention.  She is such a delight to have as a pet.

Watching this "chick" take care of herself on a daily basis reminds me of things that we all need to do on a daily basis to make sure we are taking care of ourselves.  We need to make sure that we practice daily hygiene by taking a daily bath and keeping our skin protected and moisturized.  We need to exercise, eat healthy, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep.  Now I realize that Kay Kay has no other responsibilities to attend to like we do.  I have a full time job that I am very grateful for and a husband and son that  I love dearly. I thank God for them everyday.  I know that I must work and I must help take care of my family on a daily basis.  However, that does not give me the excuse to neglect myself and God.  We should not make excuses for neglecting God, ourselves and others.  God will give us the strength and time for all these things when we ask him.

What do you say when you look in the mirror?  I know I am guilty of saying negative words to myself.  When I do that I am breaking the commandment to love myself.  When you love someone do you speak negative words to them?  No, instead you tell them that you love them and you demonstrate your love to them by doing loving things for them and saying kind things to them.  If you are having problems loving others it is most likely because you are not loving yourself.

Kay Kay loves herself and demonstrates that love by telling herself how pretty she is and she takes care of herself everyday and even takes the time to tell me that she loves me.  How awesome is that!?  Let's follow this "chicks" example and learn to do the same.  When you look in the mirror from now on tell yourself that you are the fairest one of all.  Thank God for the beauty that he has given you and make an effort everyday to take care of  yourself.  When you fail to take care of yourself, ask God to forgive you and ask him to supply you with everything that you need to take care of yourself and don't forget to love God first and foremost with all your heart, soul and mind.  God loves you and his commandment to you is to love your neighbor as yourself.  When you look in the mirror don't be unkind to yourself.  Love yourself for a change!  Oh and why not give yourself a wolf whistle every now and again!  After all you are beautiful because God made you and he says you are beautiful.  Don't disagree with God!!

Yet God made everything beautiful for it's own time.  He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end.  Ecclesiastes 3:11NLT

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?    Go ahead, say your name and agree with God!  If a "chick" like Kay Kay can do it, so can we!    God made everything beautiful, that includes me and that includes you.  I am going to start loving myself with kind words when I look in the mirror, what about you?  Don't forget to love others with kind words too!  Loving yourself is as important to God as loving others.  Whistle, Whistle! Have a "beautiful" day!!!

Dear God,

Thank you for making everything beautiful, including me.  Please forgive me for not loving myself.  Help me to be like Kay Kay and say and think positive things to myself when I look in the mirror everyday.  Help me to take care of myself on a daily basis by using good hygiene, eating healthy, exercising, drinking lots of water and getting plenty of sleep.  I want to love myself and love others.  Thank you for loving me and reminding me of how beautiful I am to you.  Help me to love you with all my heart, soul, and mind everyday.  Provide everything that I need to love you and love myself and love others.  I want to keep the two greatest commandments that you have given me.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
