If we had a way to keep a count of the times we say the word “my”, we might find it is the most used word in our vocabulary.
I was reading Psalms 62 this morning and I noticed the word “my” was used by King David numerous times .
Psalm 62:1-2,5-7
My soul finds rest in God alone;
My salvation comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
He is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
...Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
My hope comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
He is my fortress, and I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
He is my mighty rock, my refuge.
I counted 14 times that King David used the word “my”.
My, my that’s a lot of my’s!
But then “my” eyes looked down at the next Psalm that King David wrote when he was in the Desert of Judah.
Psalm 63
O God, you are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
My soul thirsts for you,
my body longs for you,
In a dry and weary land
where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better life,
my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will
praise you.
On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches
of the night.
Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.
They who seek my life will be destroyed;
they will go down to the depths of the earth.
They will be given over to the sword
and become food for jackals.
But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God’s name will
praise him.
While the mouths of liars will be silenced.
My,my! That’s a lot of my’s again. I’ll let you count them this time.
One thing I did notice about King David is that all his My’s were not really about him or his stuff but about God and his stuff!
My, my! Maybe we need to count the number of times we use the word my in reference to our stuff. (Think: My pillow)
It’s not about us!
Even when we are in the deserts of life it’s all about God.
My soul (mind, will, and emotions) should always be focused on my God, even in the worst of times.
My, my! I am going to use the words of King David as “my” prayer today!
What about you? “My” hope is you will too!
